On June 20, 2025, the first domestic 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship was officially delivered to Shanghai Changxing Island. The successful delivery of this large container ship named "Zhong** Marine Yangpu" marks that China has realized three historic breakthroughs in the construction of large methanol dual-fuel container ships: the first order by a domestic shipowner, the first delivery by a domestic shipyard, and the first application of domestically produced methanol main engine on a real ship.
With an overall length of 366 meters, a beam of 51 meters and a maximum container capacity of 16,136 TEUs, this green and environmentally friendly ship is the latest masterpiece of domestic shipping technology. The ship is equipped with 11,000 cubic meters of large methanol storage compartments, which can support one-way voyage of the whole route without refueling in the middle of the route after it is put into operation on the route from Far East to U.S.A. East, which greatly improves the operation efficiency. The vessel adopts the methanol dual-fuel main engine, methanol dual-fuel marine boiler, and methanol generator set, which is independently developed by China, and is firstly applied to container ships. The dual-fuel system can flexibly switch fuel modes according to the route demand, which fully reflects the innovation ability of China's shipping science and technology.
In terms of green and low-carbon, the ship has created a number of industry-leading indicators: the fuel oil mode and methanol mode energy consumption indicators are world-leading; the ship's Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) has reached PhaseIII standards, and a single ship can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 120,000 tons per year, which is equivalent to the carbon sink effect of planting 6.7 million trees, and has set up a new benchmark for the green transformation of the global shipping industry.
