According to the latest reports, the U.S. Department of Commerce has officially announced that it will impose new tariffs on a wide range of steel household appliances starting June 23, 2025, covering dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerators, which are classified as "steel-derived products".
According to the official notice issued by the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the tariff adjustment will include eight categories of home appliances into the category of "steel-derived products", and uniformly implement the tariff rate of 50%. It is worth noting that the actual amount of duty will be based on the proportion of the value of steel components in each category of products for accurate calculation.
The eight categories of appliances and related products affected specifically include: combination refrigerators and freezers, various models of clothes dryers, washing machines, dishwashers, horizontal and vertical freezers, cooking stoves and ovens, food waste disposers, and welded metal frames.

The new policy will apply to all relevant merchandise entered or withdrawn from warehouses on or after June 23, 2025, at 00:01 a.m. EST. However, the policy also creates a flexible exception - if the product is made from steel raw materials melted and cast on U.S. soil, it may qualify for the tax exemption even if the final processing is done overseas.
The tariff adjustment is the second expansion of tariff products since the U.S. government raised tariffs on imported steel and aluminum in March this year, showing the continued escalation of its trade protectionist policies.
Looking back at this year's trade policy changes, on February 10, the U.S. government announced that the tariff rate on steel and aluminum would be set at 25% from March 12.Before that round of tariffs went into effect, the U.S. Department of Commerce had already included about 300 steel-related products in the duty list, including a wide range of industrial supplies. By June 3, the Administration further issued a new order increasing the steel and aluminum tariff rate to 50% and authorizing the Commerce Department to expand the range of products subject to duty.

According to industry data, 2024 Chinese home appliance exports totaled 128.6 billion U.S. dollars, of which exports to the U.S. was 20.7 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 18%. This data fully illustrates the importance of the U.S. market for China's home appliance exports, the tariff adjustment will have a significant impact on the relevant enterprises.
