Trump counts down to “deadline”: warns of strikes on Iranian civilian facilities within hours if no deal is reached

Local time on April 6, U.S. President Donald Trump made tough remarks at a White House press conference, saying that he had set a “deadline for Iran to reach an agreement”: the United States at 20:00 Eastern Time on the 7th (8:00 a.m. Beijing time) before the need to come up with a program approved by him.

He said that the U.S. side may take military action against some targets in Iran within hours if it fails to meet its alleged demands by the said time, mentioning that civilian infrastructure, such as bridges and power plants, may be targeted.

Trump added: “The entire country could be destroyed overnight, and that night could be tomorrow night.”

At the negotiation level, he said that the United States is led by Vice President Vance and Presidential Special Envoy Witkoff with the Iranian side of the dialogue, and said that the Iranian side of the willingness to negotiate, negotiations have made some progress; but he also emphasized that Iran's previous proposal still does not meet the requirements of the United States.

Trump said that reopening the Strait of Hormuz was a core condition of the deal, requiring Iran to guarantee the free passage of oil and all kinds of goods; he also threw in the controversial claim that based on U.S. military superiority, tolls for ships in the Strait of Hormuz should be collected by the United States, not by the party actually in control.

The Iranian side strongly rejects this. The relevant spokespersons of the Iranian Armed Forces have criticized the said statements as delusional and arrogant threats. The Permanent Representative of Iran to the United Nations has also sent a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations protesting against the warlike statements and stating that deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure may constitute a serious violation of international law.

The report mentioned that Iran had previously submitted a response to the U.S. proposal for a truce containing 10 clauses advocating a permanent end to the conflict, the lifting of sanctions, and excluding the possibility of a temporary ceasefire.

In addition, the U.S., Israel and Iran continue to play a three-way game. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly called Trump, ostensibly to congratulate the relevant actions, but in fact warned the United States not to rush to a ceasefire with Iran. Although the U.S. side released negotiation signals, but its promotion of the 45-day ceasefire agreement is still considered difficult to reach in the short term.

The spokesman for the UN secretary-general expressed alarm at Trump's related threats, emphasizing that any attack against civilian infrastructure is a violation of international law, and calling on all parties to resolve their disputes through peaceful means and stop the war as soon as possible.

The current U.S.-Iranian conflict is said to have lasted 39 days, and tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate as the “deadline” approaches.
